Tasmanian Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff has today announced that, from the start of Term 2 in 2020, mobile phones are going to banned during school hours (including break times) in ALL Tasmanian public schools!
Mr Rockliff said the ban will apply to all students from primary school until year 12.
“While electronic devices have a place in learning, we also need to acknowledge the issues that can occur when their use is not regulated, such as cyberbullying and serious distraction,” Mr Rockliff said.
Currently, individual schools set their own policies in relation to the use of mobile phone devices by students.
Students will be required to have their phones off and put away for the duration of the whole school day, including breaks.
The ban is expected to come into effect at the beginning of Term 2 in 2020, and a review of the policy will be undertaken after twelve months in operation.
